For the 1964 LaSalle Peru Township high school graduating class, it was an eventful year.

The Beatles topped the music charts, while the country still mourned the death of JFK. Congress approved and President Johnson signed the historic 1964 Civil Rights Act, while it also approved the Gulf of Tonkin resolution, dragging the US into the ill-fated Vietnam War. The US Surgeon General announced that cigarette smoking was bad for one’s health, but then didn’t we already know that? Didn’t we call cigarettes coffin nails? My Fair Lady won best movie Oscar, and Nelson Mandela was imprisoned in South Africa.

Somehow, though, we were oblivious to all these events at the time and went on our way enjoying our senior year in high school, and making promises about how we would stay in touch after graduation. This website is dedicated to the L-P Class of 1964. Maybe in some small way, all these many years later, it will help us keep those promises.

45TH OUR BEST REUNION EVER
That is the consensus of classmates who attended our L-P Class of 1964 45th reunion September 18-19. The two venues, Jim & Linda's Riverview in Peru Friday and Deer Park Country Club Saturday were excellent, and the weather was perfect all weekend. Jim & Linda's has a patio so we were all able to enjoy a lovely evening outside with the cool and dry weather. Deer Park remodeled in the last year and it really is in great shape, inside and out. Al Lesyinski (who lives in Arizona) was the MC Saturday night and did a bang up job, with the perfect mixture of laughter and nostalgia.

About 110 people attended Friday night's event and more than 100 were there Saturday night. Together, about 130 people attended both nights, including a good number who previously had never attended a reunion. It was great to see everyone. Both nights, the visiting and conversation went well past midnight, and there was even dancing at Deer Park into the early morning! About 40 classmates enjoyed a nice tour of the school Saturday morning. Matthiessen Auditorium is still beautiful, and the woodwork and stained glass windows throughout the building are fabulous. The old gym has a different coat of paint, a new floor, and the bleachers are gone, but otherwise it brought back many memories, as did the swimming pool. Also Saturday, a number of classmates enjoyed a round of golf at Deer Park. The weather was perfect, if the golf wasn't.

It was great fun, and thanks goes to the reunion committee of Jane (Pomatto) Riva, Judy (Franken) Raccuglia, and Janet (Gapinski) LeRette for a job well done.

Reunion photos will be up on the class website (www.1964LP.com) in the next few weeks. We welcome current photos for the class website. Mail them to Class of 1964, 2416 Terrace Way, Columbia, SC 29205 or email lpclass1964@aol.com. Also, reunion booklets are available for $7.50. Please use the same mailing and email addresses. Look forward to seeing you at our 50th reunion in 2014!
